Medical Director is used by more than 17,000 clinicians every day, making it Australia's No. 1 choice for clinicians. Medical Director revolutionised the clinicians' desktop more than 18 years ago and is Australia’s leading clinical software package.
Clinicians can rest assured that through the logical workflows our software drives positive health outcomes for patients. Medical Director is used in many clinical settings, including general practice, hospital pre-admission clinics, specialist practices, allied health and multidisciplinary clinics. Medical Director is the flagship product of Health Communication Network, a company dedicated to Australia’s eHealth strategy and implementation of those projects that drive positive health outcomes.

The Most Comprehensive Set of Clinical Tools
Medical Director contains the most comprehensive set of tools for clinicians in Australia. No other clinical software product matches the comprehensive set of clinical tools, summaries, assessments and resources contained in Medical Director. Most vendors in the Australian health market design and develop add on tools specifically for use with our products, proving that HCN products are accepted to be the most used products in the Australian health sector.
Secure Clinical Document Exchange
Medical Director includes robust tools to facilitate the secure exchange of patient information between clinicians. There are more than 14,200 clinicians securely transferring clinical information. MDExchange is HCN’s secure communication system which is part of the core product and fully supported by HCN Technical Support. Our secure communication component is free to all Medical Director subscribers and facilitates the flow of discharge summaries, reports and referrals. Your network of clinicians is contained within the Medical Director address book and includes functionality which allows for sending of letters with one click from within the Letter Writer.
ePrescribing
ePrescribing is a standard feature of Medical Director through our partnership with eRX Script Exchange. The workflows have been designed with minimal disruption to the clinicians and delivers Dispense Notifications to those clinicians who choose to receive them. This delivers a foundation element for improved patient safety, medication compliance and safe communication between the clinician and the pharmacist. More than 6,300 MD3 subscribers have signed up to electronically prescribe, over 40,000 ePrescriptions are generated daily by Medical Director users and sent securely to the eRX exchange hub for collection by the 2,920 pharmacies nationwide that participate in ePrescribing with eRX. These numbers are growing rapidly.
Filmless Imaging Technology
Medical Director has the ability to receive a patient’s radiological images directly into the clinical record, associated with the written report. Filmless Imaging Technology (FIT) from DDI Health is the image streaming web server that your Radiology provider implements within their digital environments to ‘stream the image view’ into the Results window adjacent to the Radiologist’s report, providing you with a simple and quick way to view these images with your patient enabling a more efficient and informative consultation.
Aged Care
The eLink: iCare partnership delivers another cornerstone for those clinicians who are dedicated to the care of Australia’s aged community. Clinicians using Medical Director can now capture and share patient information with the market leading Aged Care software vendor, giving clinicians more time to dedicate to their patients and ensure that the correct information is being captured in the Aged Care setting. The eLink creates a consolidated view of up to date health information in a single electronic health record within iCare and hence reduces the risks associated with poorly informed decision making.
Clinical Medical Resources
MDReference is a gold standard web-based library of clinical resources, like Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and John Murtagh’s General Practice series. Containing more than 100 resources and supplied as a standard feature in Medical Director, clinicians have quick easy and fully integrated access to textbooks, journals, medicines information, clinical guidelines and more with the click of a button. Medical Director now delivers independent drug monographs, supplied by Phoenix Medical Publishing, to clinicians’ desktops. Access evidence based drug, drug-class and complementary medicines monographs, developed independently of drug company influence. Medical Director contains superior product information and consumer medicines information, which is updated daily and delivered to subscribers’ desktop through the HCN automatic update utility every month.

Server / Standalone Workstation CPU Intel Quad-Core (or equivalent) or better Intel Core2 Duo Processor (or equivalent) or better RAM 4 GB or higher 2 GB or higher Monitor Minimum resolution of 1024x768 at 16-bit colour. CD/DVD A drive capable of reading CDs and DVDs is required for software installation. Hard Disk HCN Software occupies approximately 1.5 GB of drive space. Minimum of 1 GB Free space. The actual space required to operate all software will be determined by the range of your activities. Large Hard Drives are now inexpensive and the minimum recommended size is 320Gb - 500 GB. If you require further information consult a suitably qualified professional or call HCN Technical Support. Printers PracSoft requires a Windows printer to run. HCN recommends any middle to high range Windows printer determined by the intended workload.
Multifunction Printers are not recommended for Blue Chip.Scanners Medical Director and Blue Chip require that scanners be TWAIN-compliant. Internet It is recommended that each computer have internet access to take advantage of HCN Automatic Updates. Backup And Disaster Recovery All businesses that have ‘mission critical’ data should have a full disaster recovery plan in place. This will require a full backup and restore facility for at a minimum the practice Server, but could offer significant benefit if extended to all computers that perform important functions or store practice data. This will allow you to restore the Operating System, Network settings, Applications and all data stored on the Server. While this has the impact of initial setup costs, it will provide comprehensive coverage in the event of a failure. Consider the value to your practice of your Clinical and Billing data, and ‘downtime’ in the event of a major failure. HCN recommends that practices consult a suitably qualified professional to establish your needs in this area. -
